Applied Intuition’s Path to Product-Market Fit — The $15B Founder’s Formula for a Winning Company
Introduction
Qasar Younis believes company building is a craft — one that he’s worked hard to master since he was a kid.
Younis grew up in a working class family in a Detroit suburb shaped by the auto industry. He started working at McDonald’s at 14 and juggled multiple jobs all the way through college, studying engineering and working part-time on the factory floor at the General Motors Institute.
When he watched his dad, an auto worker who’d struggled as jobs began to move to China, start his own business, he dreamed of one day doing the same.
Educational Journey
Younis inadvertently landed his job as an investor by trying to start his third company. While at Google, he had an idea to work on a robotaxi startup with Peter Ludwig, but ultimately joined Y Combinator instead.
At Y Combinator, Younis dedicated himself to studying the ingredients of a successful startup, creating a foundation for his future ventures.
Founding a Company
In 2017, Younis teamed back up with Ludwig to explore markets and ideas to pursue, following a specific formula:
1: Find a co-founder
Co-founders should share significant experiences. Younis emphasizes the importance of chemistry and mutual understanding in this partnership.
2: Choose a familiar, fast-growing market
Experience in the chosen market is crucial. Younis and Ludwig realized they needed to target the autonomy market as it was poised for growth.
3: Zero in on a problem
They identified the lack of software tools for autonomous vehicles, leading to the development of their own engineering tools for automakers.
Building Multi-Product Solutions
Younis and Ludwig recruited engineers and began assembling their first product, which later expanded into multiple offerings. Younis reflected on the necessity of becoming a multi-product company early on.
Go-to-Market Strategy
Starting in Silicon Valley, they aimed to connect with other companies in the autonomy sector before scaling to global automakers.
Scaling Up
Younis shares three personal values that have guided Applied Intuition’s growth:
Be Cost-Conscious
Maintaining a strict budget and compensation structure focused on long-term equity for employees.
You Don’t Need to Win by a Wide Margin
Staying slightly ahead of the competition is often sufficient for success.
Hard Work Compounds
Younis highlights the benefits of consistent hard work over time, noting the significant gains that can come from putting in just a few extra hours each week.
